System76 Launches Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS with COSMIC Alpha Desktop Environment

Linux hardware vendor System76 announced today the release and general availability of the long-awaited Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS distribution featuring the Rust-based COSMIC desktop environment as alpha versions for early adopters.

While Pop!_OS Linux remains based on Ubuntu, the biggest new feature of the Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS release, besides being derived from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) and inheriting its LTS (Long-Term Support) capabilities, is the brand-new COSMIC desktop environment written in Rust.

You Can Now Try Firefox’s Vertical Tabs

Mozilla says Firefox users have long requested better tab management and organization. The update, offered in Firefox Nightly 131, promises to deliver that experience. Firefox Nightly 131 improves the left-hand sidebar, featuring shortcuts for settings, bookmarks, and now vertical tabs. Mozilla said, “We have designed the new sidebar and vertical tabs experience to make two core browsing workflows more seamless – context-switching and multitasking." The company said it was working on vertical tabs for Firefox back in May.

Mozilla Firefox 130 Released with Labs, Overscroll & Web Codecs API

Mozilla Firefox 130 is out with a variety of changes that make this phenomenally popular open-source web browser a touch more productive. On Linux, Firefox 130 enables overscroll animations by default, having added them on other platforms a few years back. This is a familiar visual effect from mobile systems: when you try to scroll beyond the edge content an elastic animation indicates “nu-uh”. To save anyone being confused, the new (on Linux) Firefox over-scroll animations only play if you’re using a touchpad/trackpad to overscroll. You won’t see the effect if using a mouse.

Intel Graphics Driver With Linux 6.12 Will Finally Report Fan Speeds

Intel has submitted more kernel graphics driver changes for the upcoming Linux 6.12 cycle. Following the pull requests to DRM-Next last week to enable Lunar Lake Xe2 graphics and Battlemage by default, some more lingering feature patches were merged today. Kali Linux 2024.3 Adds 11 New Hacking Tools, Improves Raspberry Pi Support

Offensive Security announced today the release and general availability of Kali Linux 2024.3 as the latest live and installation media of this Debian-based GNU/Linux distribution for ethical hacking and penetration testing.

Coming more than three months after Kali Linux 2024.2, the Kali Linux 2024.3 release introduces 11 new tools, including graudit for source code auditing, gsocket for communication between two machines on different networks, hekatomb for extracting and decrypting all credentials from all domain computers, mxcheck for scanning e-mail servers, and sqlmc for checking all URLs of a domain for SQL injections.
