COSMIC Alpha 2 Released

Denver — System76, the premiere Linux computer manufacturer and creator of the COSMIC desktop environment, has updated COSMIC’s Alpha release to Alpha 2. The latest release includes more Settings pages, the bulk of functionality for COSMIC Files, highly requested window management features, and considerable infrastructure work for screen reader support, as well as some notable bug fixes.

With COSMIC, System76 aims to liberate the computer with a new desktop environment powerful enough to build custom OS experiences — for users, developers, and makers of any device with a screen.

Fedora Linux 41 Released with Linux Kernel 6.11, DNF5, GNOME 47, and More

The Fedora Project officially released today Fedora Linux 41 as the latest version of their Red Hat-sponsored GNU/Linux distribution for the masses featuring some of the latest and greatest software.

Powered by Linux kernel 6.11, Fedora Linux 41 comes with the latest GNOME 47 desktop environment on the flagship Fedora Workstation edition, which has been stripped of the X11 session to deliver a Wayland-only experience to users. In addition there’s also a new spin in Fedora Linux 41, called Fedora MiracleWM, featuring the up-and-coming Miracle-WM tiling window manager based on the Mir compositor library. Another new Fedora Spin is included in this release, this time for phones, tablets, and 2-in-1 laptops, featuring the KDE Plasma Mobile. Other new features in Fedora Linux 41 include support for MIPI cameras in recent laptops, as well as PipeWire camera support in the Mozilla Firefox web browser.

Immutable Distro Nitrux 3.7.1 Released with Linux Kernel 6.11, NVIDIA 565, and More

Uri Herrera announced today the release of Nitrux 3.7.1 as a new snapshot of this Debian-based, systemd-free, and immutable GNU/Linux distribution built around the KDE Plasma desktop environment.

Powered by the latest and greatest Linux 6.11 kernel series, Nitrux 3.7.1 ships updated Sysctl settings for better security and increased performance including increased Linux autotuning TCP buffer limits, increased maximum number of packets queued for processing, reused TIME_WAIT TCP connections, enabled reverse path filtering, disabled source routing, restricted access to kernel pointer addresses, disabled SysRq key, disabled timer migration across CPUs, changed dirty page settings to reduce I/O disk access, and more. It also comes with an updated SDDM login screen configuration, updated base-files package to reflect the Debian base codename to Trixie/Testing, updated desktop settings, and updated Calamares installer configuration with support for AMD GCN 2.0 (CIK) GPUs, additional security checks for user copy operations, Kernel Control Flow Integrity (KCFI) support, and more.

COSMIC Linux Desktop Gets Alpha 3 Release

System76’s COSMIC desktop environment for Pop!_OS Linux is evolving rapidly, with Alpha 3 adding key features aimed at customization and accessibility. COSMIC now supports screen readers, customizable fonts, and icons, alongside an enhanced COSMIC Files app with better file search, preview, and gallery modes. A significant update to the libcosmic framework improves the app library and launcher, though some bugs are expected. COSMIC also includes a “Made for COSMIC” section in the app store for apps tailored to the environment. Available for testing, COSMIC will eventually replace GNOME on Pop!_OS.

Shotcut 24.10 Open-Source Video Editor Released with AI-Powered Speech to Text

Shotcut version 24.10 has been released, introducing its first AI feature: a Speech to Text function for subnoscripts, powered by OpenAI's Whisper. Users can choose between a basic model included by default or download a larger one for better trannoscription, although it currently supports only Apple Silicon GPUs. Ubuntu Touch OTA-6 Rolls Out with Wireless Display Improvements, Bug Fixes

The UBports Foundation has released Ubuntu Touch OTA-6, the sixth update to its mobile operating system based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. This update improves the stability of the wireless display feature and adds support for newer Android hardware abstraction layers, facilitating the porting of devices like the Fairphone 5. Two new devices, the OnePlus Nord N10 5G and Nord N100, have been added to the supported list.

OTA-6 includes various security updates and bug fixes for a range of devices, such as the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, Fairphone models, Google Pixel 3a, and several OnePlus and Sony Xperia devices.
