There are clearly defined scientific rules that everyone must follow. These rules were not created for fun.

In 1998, because of a large number of systematic and extensive falsifications in infection and cancer research, the "Suggestions for safeguarding good scientific practice" were summarized and published in the set of rules. They were created in 1997 by an international commission on behalf of the German Research Society (DFG) and specified by universities and the German Rectors' Conference, published in print and on the Internet and made binding for all state scientific institutions and scientists in Germany. These rules and guidelines are part of the employment contract of each individual.

A.) to work "lege artis". The investigations are to be carried out at the cutting edge of research, which requires knowledge and use of the current literature, the use of appropriate methods and the latest findings.

B.) Integrity. The task of the scientist is to consistently check and doubt results, while also presenting findings of others that question results and hypotheses. Control experiments with just as complete disclosure of the experimental setup are a key part of verifying the methods used and excluding confounding factors.

C.) Quality assurance as an important feature of scientific honesty. When the results are published, methods, work steps and results must be described precisely, with a clear distinction being made between the reproduction of findings and the interpretation. Findings that reject one's own hypotheses and findings and ideas of other scientists must be communicated, as well as relevant publications by other authors and competitors must be appropriately cited.

If these criteria are not met, the work cannot be claimed to be scientific.
