👁 Deadly eye-bleeding virus 'highly likely' to reach 🇬🇧 experts warn
Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a deadly tick-borne virus endemic to warmer climates such as Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East and Asia.
Scientists fear that due to global warming, the disease could spread beyond its usual territories and spread to areas such as the UK and France.
Between 2016 and August 2022, seven cases were reported in Spain, three of whom died.
During a hearing on emerging diseases, Professor James Wood, head of veterinary medicine at the University of Cambridge, said CCHF could enter the UK "through our ticks at some point".
"The fact that ticks carry the infection does make it less likely to spread the infection widely, but it's an extremely serious infection if it's acquired."
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), up to 40 percent of infected people die from this disease.
