Rainbow Falls is the last waterfall on the Black River before it empties in to Lake Superior. It's also the only waterfall of the 5 along this stretch of river that has a trail on both sides of the river.
There is a trailhead with parking for the hike on the west side of the river off the Byway. The hike is about 1/4 mile each way, though there are a lot of stairs.
To hike to the east side of the river you park at the harbor at the end of the Byway. From there you cross the suspension bridge, and then follow the North Country Trail to the waterfall. The trail is about 3/4 mile each way from the bridge, and there are some slanted stairs at the beginning. It's an absolutely gorgeous hike through beautiful old growth forest. This is one of my favorite hikes in Gogebic county.
This waterfall was already flowing strongly! There is still a lot of river that is frozen, and still lots of snow that has to melt in the area. But this is a great start, and it will only get better.
