Meet the father of cynicism -
Diogenes (Διογένης)
of Sinope
Though instead of giving you a denoscription of his beliefs, I'll tell you one of my favorite stories about him.
One of the main discussions in ancient Greece was the definition of "man" or "human".
Aristotle defined a human as a "rational animal"- which is one of the more well-known definitions.
Plato, on the other hand, defined humans as "featherless bipeds".
(Bi, meaning two; ped, Latin word for foot). Essentially- some creature that walks on two legs and has no feathers.
Diogenes had a disdain for Plato- because his philosophy was too abstract. To prove a point, he walked into Plato's academy with a featherless chicken. Held it up and said-
"Behold! A man!"
And so the academy later added "with broad flat nails" to their definition.
