The tragedy of Orpheus (Ορφέας)
and Eurydice (Εὐρυδίκη)

Orpheus, was the son of Apollo, the God of music and the arts. He was gifted a lyre and began his pursuit in music. It was said that nobody could resist his melodies, neither enemies nor beasts.

He later met and fell in love with a woman named Eurydice. When they decided to marry- Hymenaios (God of marriage) predicted that their marriage wouldn't last, but still granted them his blessing.

One day, Eurydice was dancing with nymphs in a forest. In some other versions of the story; she tries to escape Aristaeus- a shepherd who was infatuated by her beauty.
Either way- she gets bitten by a snake and ends up going to the underworld, where the deceased go.

Orpheus is struck by grief and doesn't know what to do. He touched the hearts of beings, living or not. Everyone knew of his sorrow and grief.

One day- he decides that he wants his wife to come back. Thus begins his journey to the underworld. Any mortal would've died- but Orpheus made it through with his lyre.

Hades, and his wife, Persephone, were absolutely moved by his grief. Hades agreed for Orpheus to have Eurydice back- though under one condition.

Orpheus would have to walk in front, and Eurydice had to walk behind him. If Orpheus turned around to make sure Eurydice was there with him- she'd be back in the land of the dead.

Orpheus deemed himself a patient man, so he agreed. Towards the end though, doubt began to creep in. In a moment of mistrust- Orpheus turns around, only to realize that his wife had been there all along.

Orpheus tried to return to the underworld- but no living mortal can go through the land of the dead twice. Some say he was beaten to death by the Maenads (followers of Dionysus); later joining his wife in death.
