A prominent figure in Alexandria, mathematician, astronomer and philosopher. She was the first female thinker to have her life documented properly.
She was loved by Pagans and Christians alike- but during a political feud was killed by a mob of Christians. She was dubbed "a martyr for philosophy".
Her murder- even Hypatia herself- became a symbol for catholic opposition during the middle-ages.
In the 20th century- she was used as a symbol for women's rights and the precursor to the feminist movement.
Some portrayals of her, since the late 20th century, have associated her death to the destruction of the Library of Alexandria. Though this is completely metaphorical, considering the fact that the library had been destroyed before her death.
