🇮🇳🪖💥🪖🇵🇰 — In April/May of 1999, militants from Pakistan crossed the Line of Control (de facto border) in Kashmir, taking up positions on hills and mountains on the Indian side. Some documents claim that these were regular Pakistani army personnel. Artillery provided some cover for these infiltrations, and most groups were not discovered right away. Indian troops were mobilized, and by June had driven out or destroyed most of the infiltrators. There were widespread fears of a nuclear exchange, but this of course never occurred. Most fighting was localized to the Kashmir area. This event is commonly referred to as the Kargil War (after the Kargil district), or the Fourth Indo-Pakistani War.
