Why did Telegram change a video of the new update in the blog? 🧐
Yesterday (25/04/24) Telegram released a new update with 17 new features, including recommended channels, a way to view your own profile and display your channel and birthday on your page, improved moderation tools for group admins – and much more!
But this update drew attention on some social networks not for the features, but for one number. 1488, the number of subscribers of the example channel in one of the announcement videos.
According to Wikipedia the number "1488" is a code used by neo-Nazis and white supremacists to show their alliance with others in their movement. 14 refers to the 14-word statement: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.” and the number 88 refers to the fact that H is the eighth letter of the alphabet, so 88 is HH. This stands for "Heil Hitler".
Some even pointed out that the date "04/20" that appears bellow the number 1,488 in Telegram blog post should be a reference to Hitler's birthday.
Pretty obvious this is just a coincidence. 😅
Each Telegram announcement has hundreds of random numbers used only for the purpose of illustrating the new functions. The likelihood of appearing randomly a number with misrepresentation (like "420" for example, which stands for "weed legalization") is very high.
Today Telegram replaced this old video in the blog for this new one. The example channel now have 1,391 subscribers.

Last night, few thousands users received a compromised message sent from Wallet’s official support channel. The message included a phishing link which was unauthorised by us. The cause of this vulnerability has been rectified, and no user funds were ever under threat. The perpetrators found a small vulnerability in our integration of a third-party service used by our support team which allowed them to send a limited number of messages. Our team promptly fixed the issue and revoked all external access.
The 10 or so users who responded to the compromised message will be compensated in full. We will conduct additional checks for our customer service third party software to make sure this does not happen again, and apologise for the inconvenience.
To reiterate, funds were always completely secure, and only our customer service plug-in was affected.

The Justice considers that the absence of moderation, cooperation with the forces of law and order and the tools proposed by Telegram (disposable number, crypto, etc.) makes it complicit in drug trafficking, child criminal offences and fraud.
