Simon noticed that in Anno 1800 there is a fixed sun position enabled by default, making the sun always light up the scene from right to left, leaving fairly long shadows and making buildings more distinguishable.

On the right you can see what happens with more realistic stable sun positioning. It is harder to look and track each separate part of the city.

Which means: don't be afraid to break rules, don't rely on realism fully. Sometimes it may sound odd, it may be unreal, but still does the job better.

This is devastating: Amazon is giving up on Android!

There were startups with huge focus on Amazon publishing deals to support and maintain versions run by other teams for Google Play. It was somewhat a competition to prevent the monopoly of Google.

Amazon app store will be shut down on August 20, 2025. It was initially launched in spring of 2011.

Yet another issue with RTX 50: some cards are missing ROPs and can perform about 5% worse than expected. You can't check it before buying and there are no visual differences.

It was proved by TechPowerUp

A ROP (Raster Operations Pipeline) unit in the GPU processes pixel data, handling tasks like blending, antialiasing, render-to-texture, and writing final pixel values to the frame buffer. In contrast, a shading unit, aka "GPU core" is responsible for computing the color, lighting, and material properties of pixels or vertices during the rendering process, without directly interacting with the frame buffer, so the performance hit of the eight missing ROPs depends on how ROP-intensive a game is.

In addition to poor performance, heating, burning, and lack of support for older games, we now have one more reason to skip RTX 50.

Technicolor Group that used to have 11000+ workers in 2021 and 4500+ right now, can be closed (some departments as soon as this Monday).

The map shows locations for MPC, The Mill, Mikros Animation, plus service provider Trace VFX, as of mid-2024. Technicolor Games employed around 330 additional people (not shown), almost all in India.

Before you conclude that MPC's dramatic reduction was part of a general trend across the VFX industry, none of the four other largest VFX studios in the world saw anything like this kind of reduction. Framestore, Industrial Light & Magic, and Wētā FX seem to have modestly increased their headcount between late 2022 and the end of 2024.

DO NOT UPDATE NVIDIA DRIVERS ANYTIME SOON

Folks, I see more and more reports regarding NVIDIA cards (both online and among people I know). The recent NVIDIA driver that came out a couple of days ago makes some GPUs unresponsive (aka Black Screen).

The same was initially reported about RTX 50 a couple of weeks ago, but the most recent driver causes the same issue on RTX 30 and 40 series of cards.
