Google files getting a new "Smart Search" feature and Settings UI improvement.

This feature will make it easier to find contents/files in your storage. As I have tested the feature, In the previous version, searching with the word "apk" didn't show any result. But with Smart Search functionality it will list all files with apk/apks extensions.

(Update : I was wrong about this thing. Smart search feature is related to automatic scanning of Documents and Images files only. It is related to "Documents" tab)

Settings screen is also getting some minor tweaks. The settings are better categorised now.

Also the Naagrik/Digilocker/Document thing is ready for the launch and it will automatically scan your storage to find documents (listing screenshots as document is weird though 🫣). There are new illustrations as well.

Ohh... And the "Smart Search" feature is active by default for me. No flags needed.

#GoogleFiles #Flags

About this Smart Search feature, it's not enabled by default. I was wrong, because I had some flags turned on which made me think it's enabled by default. So if you want to enable this feature using GappsMod, then

Package - com.google.android.apps.nbu.files.device#com.google.android.apps.nbu.files

Flags - Check Screenshot I attached above.

(Update : I was wrong about this feature. Smart search feature is related to automatic scanning of Documents and Images files only. It is related to the "Important" tab and will not serve any purpose even if it's enabled with flags if you don't have "Important" tab. You can enable the document tab by enabling all flags containing the word "Naagrik")

Sound reactions in Google Phone app?

I am not going to guess about it (there is little code and this preference screen is new in V114). The only thing I know is - this feature 's code name is "Sonic" and it is refering to some strings in dex code. (yeah Google phone devs codename their features)

SONIC_HEART_EMOJI_CLICKED
SONIC_APPLAUSE_EMOJI_CLICKED
SONIC_CRY_LAUGH_EMOJI_CLICKED
SONIC_PARTY_POPPER_EMOJI_CLICKED
SONIC_POOP_EMOJI_CLICKED

Lol and turning on this option crashes my Phone' in-call screen, checking the logs hinted at SONIC.

Google app adding more font, color and style options for the content creator thing. 🫡

Once this feature rolls out, your profile will be active on profile.google.com (it is active already, but it's barebone)

@GappsLeaks

Not related to Google - I enabled back the comment/group in this channel because I make mistakes often while posting and I don't even notice until someone sends a DM to me. So it will make it easier to just comment and tell about any issue. You are welcome to join @GappsLeaksChat if you want.

Enough Play Store for today.. 🥴

Edit : Please, it's just a joke, not any experiment or beta testing. 😁

Some information - These cards are called "Flexible Content Clusters" and Google Play Store is testing different height cards according to the screen size of the device. The height of these clusters is customisable and can be changed easily if you have root.

Digilocker is ready for beta testing and you can enable the feature now if you have root (Indian Users Only)

The flag for this thing is available now in 1.1232.565110651.1-release version of Google Files.

Everything is here in the post, and if you don't want to read the details, just skip to end to see the flag. And just in case if you don't want to even open the link, just search in GappsMod under Google Files package for "Digilocker" and turn it on.

Auto Archive Photos In Albums in Google Photos

I have shared about the new Auto Archiving feature in Google Photos previously on my blog which Google is working upon. I have some more information about it. Just photos in the album will be archived, not the album itself.

1. Hide from Photos view after 30 days?
This string indicates that after turning on Auto Archiving feature the newly added/taken photos will be auto archived.

2. Stop hiding older photos in this album from your Photos view.

Photos older than 30 days will no longer be archived automatically. Currently archived photos will stay archived.

Both string will be shown when you turn off Auto-Archiving option.

3. These photos will be archived 30 days after they’re taken, so they won’t be displayed in your Photos view. You can still always find them in search, or in Archive and other albums.

This doesn't need explanation. This is just the information shown to you on the Auto-Archiving preference screen.

#GoogleContacts

There are two changes here and both are kinda old hidden behind flags but a few changes I noticed.

1. Individual contact will have "Contact Settings" on the contact screen itself. Previous these options weren't working because they were under work. Currently these options are on the action menu (three dots). If this ever rolls out, the action menu will have a few options separated by a divider (Doesn't appear in current action menu).

2. If you have an email added in contacts. It will fetch the real profile name and it's photo from its servers and show it on contact screen. Google added the logo and made the text a little bit bigger in new version. So expect it to roll out someday silently like the weather widget in contacts. 🥴

Flags ? Turn all options in com.google.android.contacts#com.google.android.contacts package. You will have everything enabled. I am too bored to find the exact one because they are encrypted flags.

#GoogleWallet

I am sure if this is new (bcz no wallet in my country) but I found new string related to this verification setting while paying through credit or debit cards in last 2-3 versions of wallet.

Can anyone confirm who use wallet for transit payments through credit or debit card, if they have this option!

Critical WebP bug: many apps, not just browsers, under threat

Keep updating your apps because many apps use libwebp including telegram. Many apps are releasing fix for this.

https://stackdiary.com/critical-vulnerability-in-webp-codec-cve-2023-4863/

How bad is it? Very. If an attacker can exploit a heap buffer overflow, they might be able to take control of a system, steal data, or introduce malware. Protecting against such vulnerabilities is crucial.

Auto Archive for everyone

Before you say that this feature was already rolled out to users, you should also know that there was a condition to be fulfilled before you can opt-into auto archiving. The condition was - have very low storage so that Google can show you an opt-in dialog while installing an app.

But now Google has started rolling it out to everyone and having low storage is not a requirement anymore. You can directly opt-into Auto-Archiving from the Google Play settings, Settings > Automatically Archive Apps.

I have it on 37.4.* version of Play Store and also in 37.5.24 (available on apkmirror). @SageSushi also confirmed that it's available for him on 37.4.

#PlayStore

I have seen many people asking if it's possible to manually archive an app!!

Answer - It is possible but Google has not enabled that functionality for users. It is hidden behind a flag and it's up to Google to enable that feature. But for that Google has to do more work and make a separate section for the archive function. Currently there is just a filter for the archived apps in the "Manage" tab which shows apps only after they are archived.

If we enable the manual archiving at this stage using the flag, there is no easy way to find out if an app is archivable. You have to select each app in "Manage" tab and see if the three dot action menu appears on top right or not. If it appears, it's archivable. If it doesn't appear, then app is not archivable.

#GPSU

Recently Google posted about some new features coming to Android Webview (so does in every browser based on chromium).

There is this thing in the GPSU update page -
[Phone, Tablet] New Stylus Rich Gestures support from Android U+ to improve device usability.

Many people were just left guessing which kind of Stylus Gestures they are. To answer that - they are the same gestures which were added in Gboard recently and perform the same functions but does not depend on Gboard for anything. They work only in text fields.

A bit of code from chromium repo which I found. -

enum StylusWritingGestureAction {
DELETE_TEXT,
ADD_SPACE_OR_TEXT,
REMOVE_SPACES,
SPLIT_OR_MERGE,
SELECT_TEXT,
};

Google recently updated it's feature drop screen and added some new content about new features in Google apps

Features such as Unknown trackers alerts, on-the-go mode in Google meet, Nearby share on windows PC and more. I have attached a video in the blog post. These features aren't new and most people are aware of them. Consider it an official announcement maybe :p

For the rooted users - this screen can be accessed by opening the .growth.featuredrops.activity.FeatureDropsActivity in Google Play Services ;)
