Abu Obeida, whose real name was Huthaifa Samir al-Kahlout, was killed in August when Israel bombed an apartment in Gaza City.

🏡 Born to a refugee family from near Majdal (now “Ashkelon”) in the ’48 Heartland, Abu Obeida grew up in Gaza. He became the Qassam Brigades’ first spokesman in 2005, near the end of the Second Intifada. Known for his trademark red keffiyeh and masked appearances, he became Hamas’s central media figure, especially in the past 2 years as Palestinians resisted genocide.

Garnering widespread popularity & reverence across the Arab world and some communities in the West, his speeches became public events, mobilizing masses of Arab protestors. His legacy is immortalized in popular culture, like songs, with phrases from his speeches now known quotes.

The Brigades also confirmed other deaths, including top commander Mohammed Sinwar, brother of late leader Yahya Sinwar.
