Ahead of Biden's speech, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell told a crowd at the Economic Club of Washington, D.C. that the central bank can't save the U.S. economy if Congress fails to raise the $31.4 trillion debt ceiling.
The U.S. has never defaulted on its debt, and officials have said that doing so would have a severe economic and financial impact.
If the U.S defaults (which it will) on it’s debt then it’s game over! It would impact the economy not just in the U.S but globally, a default would increase interest rates - which would then increase prices and contribute to inflation. The stock market would take a massive blow, as U.S. investments would not be seen as safe as they once were. The U.S is the bedrock of the global financial system, a default will shake economies across the world.
