The Sino Nepalese equation, from the earliest times:
▪️The Manchus under Qing dynasty, made Tibet a protectorate in 1728 and this brought them into direct contact with all the Himalayan kingdoms, i.e. Ladakh, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Tawang (Arunachal), for the first time in history.
▪️In the late 18th century, Nepal, under the Shah Dynasty, attempted to expand into Tibet, leading to conflict with the Qing Empire (China).
▪️The Sino-Nepalese War (1788–1792) resulted in Nepal's defeat. A peace treaty was signed in 1792, which formalized Nepal’s status as a tributary state to the Qing Dynasty.
▪️As part of this agreement, Nepal committed to sending quinquennial (once every five years) tribute missions to the Chinese emperor in Beijing. This tribute included items like local goods and offerings from Nepalese rulers.
▪️The Qing Dynasty's influence over Nepal and the tributary relationship declined in the 19th century, especially after China's internal weakening and the rise of British dominance in South Asia.
▪️By the time of the fall of the Qing Empire (1911), the tributary missions ceased entirely.
