Basically, Vecna choose El in the beginning he wanted El to be her student and his goal was to give El some powers so that the both of them could reach world domination as Vecna planned. Which we saw in the 4th season.

On the night Will was taken, he was riding his bike home after playing D&D at Mike's house. He saw a Demogorgon, fell off his bike, and was then followed home by the demogorgon. Will locked the door and frightened he tried to call for help but the door mysteriously opened without anyone touching it. Since only Vecna and Eleven possess powers like this, we lean toward Eleven as the explanation, as she performed the exact same action in the second season.

After the door opens and the demogorgon is able to enter the house, Will is running around trying to find a place to hide as he sees the shed, the door is open and the lights are ON and keep in mind NO ONE WAS HOME NEITHER JOYCE NOR JONATHAN so who could've been inside the shed?
