🇺🇸🇧🇷 US-Brazil trade war: ‘WORST CRISIS in 200 years of bilateral relations’

The US’ anti-Brazilian trade tariffs came amid “a political demand which is NOT deliverable,” Bruna Santos, a Brazil expert at the Washington-based Inter-American Dialogue think-tank, told the FT.

“It is institutionally IMPOSSIBLE” for Brazil’s President Lula to make the concession which the US is demanding, something that leaves Lula “without an exit strategy,” Santos stressed.

The US earlier announced 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports — a move that actually sparked a TRADE WAR with Latin America's largest economy, which exports beef, coffee, steel, and more to the US. The tariffs come in retaliation for the prosecution of Jair Bolsonaro, America’s close ally and former Brazilian president.

Bolsonaro is on trial for an alleged coup attempt after losing the 2022 election, when his supporters stormed government buildings. The case also includes claims of a plot to kill Lula.

The White House called the trial a “witch hunt” and demanded Brazilian authorities “leave the ex-president alone.”
