Economic Perfect Storm: Food Price Inflation Could Hit Double Digits (Report)

Britain's biggest chicken producer said that the country's 20-year cheap food binge is ending, and food price inflation could hit double digits. Shortages of warehouse workers, truckers and butchers as well as COVID and Brexit, exacerbating strains in the UK. (Reuters)

"Food is too cheap," Ranjit Boparan, who is known as the "Chicken King" and owns the 2 Sisters Group, was quoted as saying by The Times newspaper.

With central bankers on high alert and inflation in Spain, Ireland and Sweden hitting 13-year highs, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde repeated that the upswing in Europe is seen as temporary and said there were no signs of it becoming embedded in wages.

Conservative MP Sir David Amess has been stabbed multiple times while attending a constituency surgery in Essex, England. Armed Police and forensics officers are on the scene – his condition is yet unknown.

Italian Dock Workers BLOCKADE Major Port in Anti-Green Pass Protests

Thousands of picketing port workers are attempting to seriously disrupt Italy’s supply chains – blockading Trieste, the country’s most important commercial hub, as they demand the govt overturn the compulsory imposition of the Green Pass.

As of Friday, Italian citizens must show their Green Pass in the workplace or face suspension with no pay - proving they have had either at least one vaccine dose, recovered from the illness in the last six months, or tested negative in the last 48 hours.

According to estimates, some 40% of Trieste workers have not been jabbed while a total of 2.5mn Italians remain unvaccinated.

HK watchdog investigates Evergrande and auditors PwC over accounts

The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) has launched an inquiry into the 2020 and first half of 2021 accounts of Evergrande - and into the audit carried out by PwC that assessed their sustainability.

According to the FRC, Evergrande reported cash reserves of around $24.73bn - covering just over 10% of current liabilities - but PwC didn’t report any uncertainties over the company as a going concern.

Evergrande has now missed three rounds of interest payments on overseas bonds, and has estimated liabilities of $300bn.
