China Evergrande shares PLUMMET 12% as debt deadline approaches

The struggling Chinese property developer shares plunged to an 11-year low Monday, after strong indications that it is on the verge of a potentially disastrous default.

A statement from the company over the weekend said that there was “no guarantee” that the group could meet its obligations and added that creditors had demanded immediate repayment of a total of $260mn.

However, its most pressing issue is a $82.5mn debt due Monday – a deadline pushed back 30 days when it failed to meet the obligation on the due date back in November.

UK govt threatens to confiscate passports in “ALL OUT WAR” on drugs (as cocaine found in parliament)

UK PM Boris Johnson is set to announce a 10yr $925mn plan to tackle drug-related crime by “keeping nothing off the table” to interfere with offenders’ lives, including confiscating passports and driving licenses. (The Sun)

He claimed politicians had been scared of tackling the issue out of fear their own habits would be revealed after Dominic Raab, Michael Gove and Johnson himself admitted to past cocaine or marijuana use - while traces of cocaine were found in all but one parliament lavatories.

It is estimated around half of UK burglaries and violent robberies are drug related, with illegal substances costing $25bn/year to tackle.

China seeks first military base on Africa’s Atlantic Coast, US intel reveals (report)

Classified US intel believes China is plotting to build a military naval base for the first time on the Atlantic Ocean, on the coast of the small African nation Equatorial Guinea. (WSJ)

The potential of Chinese warships being able to rearm and refit opposite the East Coast of the US has set off alarm bells at the WH and Pentagon. US national security adviser Jon Finer visited Equatorial Guinea in October to try and persuade the country to reject China’s overtures for such a project.

The report speculated China would consider building the military facility in Bata, Equatorial Guinea – Beijing already has a deep-water commercial port in the city.
