Ancient Frozen Viruses Could Be Released if Permafrost Melts, Warns Russian Diplomat
Russia’s senior official at the Arctic Council Nikolay Korchunov has reiterated warnings of ancient viruses that may be released if global warming melts too much permafrost.
“There is a risk of old viruses and bacteria waking up,” Korchunov said. “Because of this, Russia has initiated a ‘biosafety’ project within the Arctic Council,” he continued, which will assess “risks and hazards” related to “permafrost degradation” and “future infectious diseases.”
Earlier this year Russian scientist Sergey Davydov warned that ancient ecosystems, including viruses, could be brought back to life if permafrost - which covers 65% of Russia’s territory - melts enough.

La Palma Volcano goes QUIET - after months of spewing lava
The Cumbre Vieja in Spain’s Canary Islands has finally gone quiet after almost three months of continual eruptions.
Scientists have not recorded seismic activity since Monday, however have warned locals to not drop their guard amid the lull in activity.
"That does not mean the eruption has finished, because in the past this has been followed by a new surge in activity," the Canary Island’s Volcanology Institute said.

A massive fire has engulfed the World Trade Center in Hong Kong Wednesday and has already been upgraded to a level three incident after at least 8 people were injured and hospitalized according to HK police.
Authorities say firefighters have rescued around 150 people so far, with over 100 trapped on a rooftop terrace.
The fire reportedly broke out in an engine room and then spread to scaffolding on the outside of the 38-storey building that’s currently undergoing renovations.
