Europe Energy Prices Soar as France Halts Nuclear Reactors (Bloomberg)

European benchmark power prices surged to a record level after Electricite de France SA (EDF) was forced to close or extend the halts of as many as four nuclear reactors for safety reasons - just as demand spikes for winter.

EDF is set to halt two reactors at its Chooz nuclear plant later this week and extended halts of two units at its Civaux site until spring after agreeing with the safety regulator to replace faulty pipes – the reactors make up almost 10% of French nuclear capacity.

German electricity for next year jumped more than 10% upon the announcement with French week-ahead power prices soaring by 20% in broker trading while the January contract skyrocketed 36% on the European Energy Exchange.
