Spain Scorched by “Real Monster” Wildfire in One of Earliest Heatwaves Ever

Over 600 firefighters are battling to contain devastating flames that have devoured over 25,000 hectares in northern Spain – with hundreds of citizens evacuated and over 70 species endangered.

The Sierra de la Culebra Mountain range is home to a resurgent Iberian wolf population and some of the richest biodiversity in Europe, but it is under a threat of “brutal proportions” according to one environmentalist.

Eight of the country’s 17 regions have been affected - Catalonia was struck by 30 wildfires Saturday - due to the intense heat, while across the border in France record high temperatures hit 42.9°C in Biarritz.
