Australian court rules media outlets LIABLE for Facebook user comments

A landmark ruling by Australia’s highest court on Wednesday ruled that media outlets are “publishers” of defamatory comments posted by Facebook users on their social media pages and therefore can be sued.

Mainstream outlets had argued that they could only be considered as “publishers” if they were aware of offensive comments and meant to spread them – judges shot down the theory stating that outlets are responsible by facilitating and encouraging discussions online.
