Another Epidemic: China Downplaying African Swine Fever Outbreak?
China could be skewing African Swine Fever's actual impact on pig farms by under-reporting infection numbers - painting a better-than-reality picture, industry experts say.
This year, China reported just 12 ASF cases to the OIE, the inter-governmental body that tracks animal diseases, down from a high of 105 in 2018. But a report by the Asian Development Bank estimated that China lost anywhere between $50 to $121 billion worth of hog herds to the virus since 2018, leaving analysts scratching their heads.
Chinese officials identified the first case of ASF in 2018 in Liaoning, a coastal province in China's northeast. ASF is no threat to humans, but is highly deadly to pigs with mortality rates around 100%.
