The decision of Turkish President Erdogan and the candidate leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Ersin Tatar to jointly announce the expansion of the coastal front of Varosia has caused the "government" coalition of the illegally occupied territories to collapse.

German Government Spokesperson said today regarding the Turkish decision to reopen Varosia: "[...] This is an unnecessary and challenging step [...] We are now inviting all parties to a dialogue and we will closely monitor any further development"

Once again the German government does its best to avoid using any harsh terms against Turkey even when they are in clear violation of international law and increasing tensions. Usually the expression used by German officials is that "it sends the wrong message" as if Turkey had done something by mistake or had expressed itself badly by mistake.

Varosia/Varosha is a region in Farmagusta, once one of the biggest touristic attractions in Cyprus before the Turkish invasion. The residents were forced to leave and according to UN resolutions it was supposed to stay empty (it is a ghost town) but Turkish authorities and other organizations have been trying to claim it and turn it into a settlement.

Varosha has a very strategic location, considered by Turkey one of the best places to build a base that would facilitate their illegal Seismic Surveys and drilling operations inside Cypriot EEZ waters
Diplomatic sources in Brussels say that the new Turkish escalations will most likely be an important subject at the next EU summit that is set to happen in October 15-16
