SEX and the CITY and US

💗 Reading in English and in Russian. (Adult literature)

And what is the book itself about

We all remember these iconic women , do we ?

Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha launched a barrage of trends, forever branded the actresses that took on the roles, redefined women’s relationship to sex and elevated the perception of singlehood.

Featuring exclusive new interviews with the cast and writers, including star Sarah Jessica Parker, creator Darren Star, executive producer Michael Patrick King, and author Candace Bushnell, Sex and the City and Us brings us a both a critical and nostalgic, behind-the-scenes look at a television series that changed the way women see themselves.

Who is Jennifer Keishin Armstrong

Jennifer Keishin Armstrong’s writing takes readers behind the scenes of major moments in pop culture history and examines the lasting impact that our favorite TV shows, music, and movies have on our society and psyches. She investigates why pop culture matters deeply, from The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Seinfeld, to Sex and the City and Mean Girls, to Beyoncé, Taylor, Chappell, and Sabrina. She has written eight books.

Jennifer began her career in newspapers and spent ten years on staff at Entertainment Weekly, where she reported from the front lines of Grey’s Anatomy, 30 Rock, Lost, and a variety of teen dramas. Her writing has since appeared in BBC Culture, New York magazine, Billboard, and many other places.

❗️Here's what Vogue writes about the latest book :

Armstrong’s book is in-depth and insightful, with a fangirl’s reverence for the nitty-gritty of the creative process.”
—Vogue

It's really great that the book can be now found in Russian too!
The author delves deeply into the stories ,not to mention the cocktails and cupcakes, that made the show a cultural phenomenon.
In English, I'd recommend reading the book with the level B1+ ,as minimum

Have a warm autumn 🍂 Sunday ❤️

"Little Book of Audrey Hepburn” might be best described as a coffee table book in miniature. It would make a great end table book as it is perfect for casual browsing as it has plenty of attractive photos of the legend that is Audrey Hepburn.

The text zeroes in on the iconic style of the actress and is a tribute to her timeless appeal.

I borrowed the book from the library as I've always been fascinated by the actress, not only does her cinematographic contribution matter but her deep personality what makes us fall in love with her .

How did the idea for the book arise ?

Hardly ever could the question be answered better than Caroline Jones herself did in the interview :

It’s really a style biography that takes you through the evolution of her unique look—from her early days as a ballet dancer to her iconic film roles. Although there have been many books on Audrey, I felt that no one had written about the way her life experiences and events had influenced her sartorial style in a chronological way.

The book also discusses Hepburn's legendary friendship with Hubert de Givenchy , who once told this :

She gave a life to the clothes—she had a way of installing herself in them that I have seen in no one else since… Something magic happened. Suddenly she felt good. You could feel her excitement, her joy.”

I'd undoubtedly recommend reading the book. Filled with stunning photographs, this tribute to her life and work shows her unique beauty .

BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY 'S is and ans always will be an iconic film ever , and petit noir by Givenchy will stay chic for decades and decades ahead .

English level : B2 + ( full of denoscriptions of garments and style , fabric and colours. It might cause a slight difficulty)

🌸 For our very young readers

My first post dedicated to children's literature in English!

Pip and Posy books in English

With a wide range of kid’s literature to choose from, Pip and Posy books are some of the few book series that have captured the essence of early youth friendship quite globally.

Created through the gifted creator and illustrator Axel Scheffler, best recognized for his works on The Gruffalo, those pleasant books comply with the regular adventures of best friends, Pip the Mouse and Posy the Rabbit. These series of books are not only for fun reading but also for creating a loving educational experience for kids.

Found by chance, my eye caught the book under the noscript
" THE SNOWY DAY " ❄️

I remembered the moments spent with my young learners .... I used to teach 5 - 6 year-olds and those lesson of reading stories are still in my memory. Friendly air around our reading a story , kids in a circle and me in the middle with a bunch of books in my hands - it was special.

❗️The Snowy Day is better for kids who already know

the Past Simple

essential words for clothes and colors

However, even if they don't know the rules , let it go without any grammar. Nothing is better than the vibe and the aura of reading in English together

Vibrant illustrations !
Mild storytelling!
Simplistic story!
Emotionally relatable !
Christmas mood !

↘️ I'll attach the book and the Workbook ( Thanks to vk ) in the comments for you

Love,
Your Yulia ❤️

SOMERSET MAUGHAM

One of my favourite English novelists, playwrights and short - story writers. For me , his prose is characterized by a shrewd understanding of human nature and a clear style, which you'll never mistake with anyone else.

Today Im sharing with you this -

" The ant and the grasshoper " ( 1924 )
It is a story that undoubtedly reminds me about the fable " Стрекоза и муравей " И.А.
When you have read it, you'll get it ))

"The ant 🐜 and the grasshopper " ( Level B2 -C1 )
reinterprets a classic fable through the lens of two brothers, George and Tom. Unlike the fable’s clear-cut division of industriousness and idleness, George (the ‘ant’) works diligently but lacks joy, while Tom (the ‘grasshopper’) lives carefree and spends lavishly.

However, Maugham’s story, and his first-person narrator, don’t explicitly judge or endorse either brother’s approach to life. It leaves the reader to ponder the complexities of finding balance between responsibility, enjoyment, and ultimately, finding fulfilment in life.

I derived a true pleasure from reading the story retold by SOMERSET MAUGHAM. The writer unpacked different truths of life and the story doesn't have neither age nor time - Timeless Classics !

I'll return to you with one more post about Somerset Maugham as soon as I cherrypick the story to tell you about 🫰

❗️The story is below .
Enjoy your read
S.Maugham is worth it ❤️

Level of English: B1 - C1 ( Russian parallel translation helps and supports you )
I also want to share one interesting fact about " PRIDE AND PREJUDICE "

Pride and Prejudice was published in 1813 but it had been written many years before that.  Austen was inspired to write the novel following a stay with her brother and his wife and wrote the first version of the book, which she ennoscriptd ‘First Impressions’ between 1796 and 97.  When she finished the novel she sent it to a London publisher but, in a decision that ranks alongside the refusal to sign the Beatles in the analogues of missed opportunities, the publisher, Cadell, declined it by return of post.
Some years later, having made significant changes to the work, including the noscript, Austen was able to get the book published.  The original manunoscript is lost forever but, analysis of the final text and the large volume of correspondence between the characters suggests that it might have been an epistolary  (told through letters) novel.

Jane Austen's guide to dating

Published in 2005
Author : Lauren Henderson ( UK 🇬🇧 )
Level of English: B2 / C1
( full of spoken collocations and idioms but it doesn't make the book hard to read ! )

🤌Jane Austen's witty , perceptive and romantic novels have delighted readers for two hundred years. With clear sight, common sense and good judgment, she observed the hits and near-misses of her heroes and heroines in love.
Dating certainly hasn't got any easier since then and Lauren Henderson believes that today's singletons could use some of that Regency wisdom.

This is the only dating guide based on stories that really have stood the test of time. It's a fun , insightful book. Henderson deftly summorizes all the love stories in the books and provides us with psychological tests at the back of the book, which I think is sweet and looks like a treat ))

🤌Contents 🤌

1. If you like someone, make it clear that you do

2. Don't put your feelings on public display, unless they're fully reciprocated

3. Don't play games or lead people on

4. Have faith in your own instincts

5. Don't fall for superficial qualities

6. Look for someone who can bring out your best qualities

7. Don't settle - Don't marry for money,or convenience, or our of loneliness

8. Be witty if you can ,but not cynical ,indiscreet,or cruel

9.Be prepared to wait for the right person to come along

10. If your lover needs a reprimand, let him have it

My final words in favour of the book are the following:

" If you're exhausted and need something light, modern, juicy, romantic and a cut-out-and-keep guide available , it is all here , in these 267 pages . Light is a keyword ))"

Back to W.S. Maugham

THE PAINTED VEIL ( 1925 )

The novel was first published in serialized form in 5 issues of Cosmopolitan.

The focal character is Kitty Garstin.

Set in England and Hong Kong in the 1920s, The Painted Veil is the story of the beautiful but love-starved Kitty Fane. When her husband discovers her adulterous affair, he forces her to accompany him to the heart of a cholera epidemic. Stripped of the British society of her youth and the small but effective society she fought so hard to attain in Hong Kong, she is compelled by her awakening conscience to reassess her life and learn how to love.

The Painted Veil is a beautifully written affirmation of the human capacity to grow, to change, and to forgive.

There's also a spectacular film ( 2006) USA 🇺🇸
Starring Naomi Watts and Edward Norton

I personally devoured this book !

💡Have you read the book ? What's your take on it ?

The link to download the book

💡It's worth mentioning that the book and the movie have different endings. It is neither bad nor good because it gives extra ways how to interprete characters , the ways of your soul to choose

I remember having read the book many times with my students. It was a wonderful, enriching experience.

Have a warm weekend, my dear friends !

Love,
Your Yulia ❤️

JOHN STEINBECK

" OF MICE AND MEN "

John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” is a powerful exploration of friendship, dreams, and the harsh realities of life. The narrative, while compact, is rich in its depiction of the human condition.

Steinbeck’s masterful storytelling and vivid characterizations bring to life a world that is both harsh and beautiful, filled with individuals who are products of their circumstances yet strive for more.

The story’s central theme—the human longing for companionship and understanding—is embodied in the relationship between George and Lennie. Their friendship, marked by sacrifice and deep mutual respect, is a beacon of hope in an otherwise bleak landscape. Moreover, the novel’s underlying critique of the American dream, as represented by George and Lennie’s elusive dream of owning land, is as relevant today as it was during the Great Depression.

Having seen this novella staged in the theater Comedianti ( Ligovski Prospekt,44 ) , I could hardly articulate any words because I was under a deep impression ... I felt breathless as if I was experiencing catharsis. I wouldn't lie if I told you that the play turned out a masterpiece, after watching it the only words were " Theater as an Art form is alive ! It is here, I can sense it , and it can make my heart beat wildly . "
I was crying. It touches but it doesn't kill you,on the contrary such literature reminds us that we are human.

There's also a film under the same noscript ( 1992 ) . I don't want to watch it ...not yet . Until the actors ' voices are echoing in my ears, I won't watch it not to spoil the air of theater play.

Have you read anything by John Steinbeck?

👇the pdf is traditionally left for you

Love,
Yulia ❤️
