Do you remember this story about a disk with bitcoins worth hundreds of millions of dollars; dumped?

The story began like this. One cloudy British morning, engineer James Howells discovered that his partner had mistakenly threw away a hard drive with a Bitcoin core wallet with a wallet.dat file and 7,500 bitcoins to the local dump.

In recent years, this case has attracted a lot of media attention, as the value of the lost cryptocurrency has grown rapidly with each jump in BTC prices.

The British court dismissed the lawsuit filed by James Howells against the Newport City Council for refusing to allow him to search for a lost hard drive containing about 7,500 bitcoins (BTC).

Moreover, the Newport City Council in its objecting documents claimed that the hard drive belonged to it, and therefore Howells had no right to claim it.

Thus, the court ruled that the hard drive of engineer Howells belongs to the municipality of Newport.

This decision was made after Howells, a computer engineer from Newport, filed a lawsuit at the end of 2024, demanding more than $640 million from the city council.

He also promised to donate 10% of the bitcoins found to the municipal council if the search group manages to return the hard drive.

Municipal lawyers compared the excavation of the disk in the dump with the search for a needle in a haystack.

Engineer Howells' lawyer, Armstrong, objected that the excavations would be a "thorough" search in a small area.

As a result, the municipality appropriated the citizen's bitcoins for itself.

The most interesting thing in this story is that no one will ever find this disc, because, as in a good English detective story, the clue may be in a completely different place.
