Title: Approximable triangulated categories and applications
Abstract: We will describe a recent development, which is based on borrowing the technique of studying Cauchy sequences in metric spaces to the world of triangulated and derived categories. The fact that such a strange marriage produces interesting applications will be the main focus of the talk. We will explain how it can be used (1) to prove a conjecture of Bondal and Van den Bergh, (2) give a really short, sleek proof of Serre's old GAGA theorem, and (3) give a much clearer and more conceptual approach to an old theorem of Rickard's about Morita equivalence. Knowledge of metric spaces and completion will be assumed. We will not give much of a review of triangulated categories, but will spell out the motivating examples to keep in mind.

Title: Kaplansky's conjectures
Abstract: Three conjectures on group rings of torsion-free groups are commonly attributed to Kaplansky, namely the unit, zero divisor and idempotent conjectures. For example, the zero divisor conjecture predicts that if K is a field and G is a torsion-free group, then the group ring K[G] has no zero divisors. I will survey what is known about the conjectures, including their relationships to each other and to other conjectures and group properties, and present my recent counterexample to the unit conjecture.

ABSTRACT: In 1985, Jean-Pierre Serre gave a series of lectures at Harvard about the maximal number of
rational points on curves over finite fields. In my talk, I will tell about the motivations to study such
problem and, through 3 snapshots, show recent research directions.

Title: Algebraic and Geometric Theory of General Systems of Differential Equations
ABSTRACT: Much of the theory of (partial) differential equations is concerned with rather special types of systems or even just individual systems. Using functional analytic techniques, deep results about very general types of solutions have been achieved.
It is much less known that with algebraic and geometric techniques one can develop a theory about general systems with basically no assumptions about their structure, leading at least to an analytic solution theory.
In this talk, we will introduce this so-called formal theory of differential equations which uses a geometric model of systems of differential equations based on jet bundles. It turns out that the hierarchy of jet bundles induces a natural polynomial structure which allows us to associate with any system of differential equations a polynomial module which can be analyzed with homological methods. This eventually culminates into the theorems of Cartan-Kuranishi and Cartan-Kähler providing the desired existence theory for analytic solutions.

Title: Arithmetic Geometry of Moduli of Representations
ABSTRACT: Let Γ be a finitely generated group and G a connected reductive group. The moduli space of representations of Γ into G, also known as the character variety (or character stack), plays a central role in diverse areas of mathematics, including Geometric Langlands and non-abelian Hodge Theory. In this talk, I will explain how one goes about counting points on the moduli space over finite fields. As we shall see, salient features of complex representations theory of finite reductive groups (Deligne—Lusztig theory, etc.) comes into play.
