Previously, I talked about Ingress' past here. I'll use this note to reflect on the present. And I'll write a new note with some thoughts on the future (eventually). But first, here's the video I originally meant to share with my 2023 advent calendar entry:…

With the latest Ingress update, the "Native Frame Rate" toggle in the settings was removed. Instead, the setting is now enabled by default and cannot be turned off.

The newest update brings changes to the render pipeline, however it seems like it is causing some problems, including missing textures, bad visibility and alpha channel shenanigans.

The Drone apparently got upgraded with an afterburner! The animation for moving the Drone has been sped up, drastically reducing the waiting time before hacking the new Portal.

Some interesting stuff:
- Greatly reduced post-processing, which might fix the bug some people experienced when OCing that causes thin Glyph lines to appear
--> If you updated and still experience this bug, please open a bug report in the app
- Average Scanner app startup time from cold start is 2.3 seconds faster
- Average Drone move time is 1.0 second faster
- Average Agent Profile open time is 0.5 seconds faster
- Native Refresh Rate is the standard of the new rendering system Unity uses, as the native refresh rate of a device is generally best for the battery life as it reduces extra work to "throttle" Ingress
- Niantic mentiones once again that Ingress is intended to "stay long-term", even though the team working on it is quite small
Do read through the full article, it is quite interesting anyway: https://ingress.com/news/2024dev-scannerrenderingupdate

The latest update changed a lot of code related to rendering in the game which also came with a few bugs. Some of them have been confirmed by Niantic via various Social Media comments from Brian and Alex, the technical designer that has worked on the update. We have compiled a small list below.
🔸No colors when scanning
When recording a Portal Scan, the camera feed does not reflect the color of the Portal and you cannot see which area you have already scanned.
NIA comment (Brian): "This is a known issue [...]. We're still investigating different options here."
🔸Thin glyph lines during Overclock
Even though Niantic hoped that it was fixed with the latest update, it sadly still appears from time to time.
NIA comment (Alex): "Ah, thats a shame. It seems to be the most elusive bug."
🔸Visibility issues under multi-layered fields
In an area with multiple layered fields, other Links, Portals and roads are hard to see.
NIA comment (Alex): "Signal received. I am investigating this issue now. [...] We will definitely fix this in the next update."
(Note that these comments come from the personal Social Media accounts of Brian and Alex and are therefore not written 'professionally'. Don't mind the more casual wording.)

🤖 ML AUTO DECISION ISSUE
NianticTintino has shared a post that the ML system had an issue causing some incorrect auto-accepts and incorrect auto-rejects.
It has now had it’s auto-reject feature re-enabled but the auto-accept of ML is still being investigated so you won’t see any quick accepts now.

Niantic is sending out their annual survey asking Agents for feedback and opinions on some questions. This year the survey includes some interesting "What if" questions such as what would need to be included in a higher tier of C.O.R.E. for you to subscribe to it or how you feel about some ideas regarding new features.
Check your emails and make sure to fill out the survey! We will post interesting questions here once we get access to it as well.
