Congratulations to Public Interest Legal for another slam dunk win in South Carolina. The National Voters Rights Act explicity states that the statewide voter rolls is a record that is subject to inspection aka should be FREE to citizen analysts....not $5000 or fees varying from county to county.
Many candidates this Spring were told by their county clerks to pay for this information while they were preparing to contact their constituents or door knock, while other clerks were producing them for free. The Secretary of State's office when contacted about this discrepancy incorrectly stated that the clerks could charge whatever they wanted to. "Accordingly, the Court declares that the South Carolina Statewide Voter Registration List is a record subject to inspection pursuant to the NVRA, and that the NVRA preempts any South Carolina law limiting access to the Statewide Voter Registration List to South Carolina registered voters." - Judge Joseph Anderson Jr.
