It’s been 23 years since I first used a private messaging service, and 16 years since I first built my own. The number of electronic private conversations I’ve had over those years is enormous. I am certain this is also the case for you.

Over the last 10-20 years, each of us exchanged millions of messages with thousands of people. Most of those communication logs are stored somewhere in other people’s inboxes, outside of our reach. Relationships start and end, but messaging history with ex-friends and ex-colleagues remains available forever.

It’s getting worse. Within the next few decades, the volume of our private data stored by our chat partners will easily quadruple.

An old message you already forgot about can be taken out of context and used against you decades later. A hasty text you sent to a girlfriend in school can come haunt you in 2030 when you decide to run for mayor. We have to admit: despite all of our progress in encryption and privacy, we have very little actual control of our data. We can’t go back in time and erase things for other people.

Well, we couldn’t. Until today. Today we allowed every user to delete any message in a private conversation from both sides. It doesn’t matter who sent the message and when – you have complete control over it. You can even wipe out the whole conversation from both sides if you want to. No trace will be left on any side.

We know some people may get concerned about the potential misuse of this feature or the permanence of their inboxes. We thought carefully through those issues, but we think the benefit of having control over your digital footprint is more important.

Looking through my Telegram inbox now, there’s not much I would want to delete for both sides. And yet, somehow for the first time in 23 years of private messaging, I feel truly free and in control.

Yesterday we stopped accepting new submissions for the March contest. Overall, we received 225 apps for Android, 148 apps for iOS, and 560 apps for Web. This is a large number and we thank everybody for taking part.

We’ll carefully go through each app and make sure every participant receives a short review of their work. We hope that our feedback will allow participants to improve or reconfirm their skills.

After selecting and awarding the winners of this round, we may launch another round to identify the best of the best. We’ll be sharing more news at the end of this week.

🙈Come risolvere il problema della memoria di Whatsapp troppo piena

Ho la sfortuna di essere su 3 gruppi di Whatsapp che non fanno altro che caricare foto, video, messaggi vocali, e tutto ciò che non ha niente a che vedere con i messaggi di testo, e a questo punto ho 3 scelte: uscire dal gruppo incitando dispiacere nei familiari, disabilitare il download dei file perdendomeli, e scaricare tutti i contenuti saturando la memoria del mio dispositivo.

The results of the March Android contest have arrived.

Out of the hundreds apps we received for the contest, we aimed to select those that demonstrated the highest speed and performance.

To identify them, we would typically run the 5th graph with four lines (zoomed out, checking / unchecking the red line) on older but popular devices (e.g. Samsung S5, Moto X and Xiaomi Redmi Note 4).

We discarded all the apps that failed to run or had performance issues in these cases. Likewise, we discarded all the apps that displayed each chart on a separate screen, as the contest goal was specifically to show them “on one screen”.

We also had to eliminate all apps that crashed in random cases. As a result, we selected one winner - @thankyou2. The app of this 26 y.o. engineer from St. Petersburg is the only one that runs fast and stable on all our devices and complies with the design guidelines.

@thankyou2 will receive $50,000 from Telegram.

We also have a runner-up – @where_is_s - who will receive $10,000 from Telegram. The app of this 30 y.o. engineer from Novosibirsk has fewer glitches and is almost as fast as @thankyou2’s.

We invite all participants of this contest to take part in the next and final stage of the Chart Coding Contest that starts this Saturday, on the 6th of April. Its prize budget will be another $150,000.
