The fruit of knowledge was not "forbidden" per se, but rather left for later, when both Adam and Eve would grow enough spiritually to be capable of taking on its burden. It is this rush, this hurry, that cause the fall from Eden that we must now suffer and toil for.
Christ, in this case, represents, as we know, the Pre-Adamic man, the man who did not fall from Eden, who never fell from Eden; He is both the never-tainted and the already redeemed. And all of that, embodied by Patience.
