Regulation of Neurotransmitters by the Gut Microbiota and Effects on Cognition in Neurological Disorders
Emerging evidence indicates that gut microbiota is important in the regulation of brain activity and cognitive functions. Microbes mediate communication among the metabolic, peripheral immune, and central nervous systems via the microbiota–gut–brain ...
Cold showers increase resistance to disease
Researchers from the Netherlands studied that people who regularly washed their faces with cold water were less likely to take sick leave.
More than 3,000 people took part in the study. They were divided into four groups and asked to take warm showers daily:
- The first group was recommended to end their shower with 30 seconds of cold water.
- The second group was told to stand for one minute, and the third group was told to stand for 90 seconds.
- The fourth group was to take only warm baths.
After a three-month observation period, they found that the groups that had cold water had a 29 percent reduction in voluntary sick leave.
And that's because a little stress (like temperature stress) activates the body's adaptive mechanisms, which are normally dormant.
