One legend about King Richard I of England 🏴
Reports that the daughter of the King of Almain, who imprisoned Richard on his return from his Crusade, fell in love with her father’s captive.
When her father found out, he wanted to kill Richard, but his advisors convinced him to make it look like an accident. The court lion was to be accidentally let loose in Richard’s cell.
The princess pleaded with Richard to make an escape, but he would not hear of it. He instead asked her for forty silk handkerchiefs, and bound them around his right arm.
When the lion found his way to Richard’s cell and attacked, Richard reached his arm down the lion’s throat and pulled out its heart.
He of course gave thanks to God for protecting him during the encounter, then marched out to the King’s dining hall. He conspicuously placed the heart on the table, procured some salt, and then proceeded to eat the heart raw!
