Happy Easter everyone! Did you know that some historians believe that the name "Easter" might have come from the pagan festival celebrating the arrival of spring called "Ostara" or "Eostre"? The monk Bede mentioned the goddess Eostre, who was believed to rule over the early spring month and was worshipped by the early pagans as a goddess of dawn, upspringing light, blessings, and possibly as a liminal goddess of portals and doorways. Her worship may have included offerings of colored eggs hung from trees during the Vernal Equinox.

The use of eggs and rabbits in Easter traditions also have pagan origins and are associated with fertility and rebirth, which are themes that are also associated with Eostre.

Regardless of our beliefs, let's celebrate this time of year with joy and hope for new beginnings!

Happy Easter everyone

Latin: "Eosturmonath, qui nunc paschalis mensis interpretatur, quondam a dea illorum quae Eostre vocabatur et cui in illo festa celebrabant nomen habuit, a cuius nomine nunc paschale tempus cognominant; consueto antiquae observationis vocabulo, quondam calendis Aprilis festum illud celebrabant."

Translation: "Eosturmonath, which is now interpreted as the paschal month, was formerly named after the goddess Eostre, and has given its name to the festival of Pasch [Easter] celebrated in that month. The ancients also observed this festival in her honour on the first day of April, and called it 'Eostre's feast'."

"If I were a physician, and if I were allowed to prescribe just one remedy for all the ills of the modern world, I would prescribe silence. For even if the Word of God were proclaimed in the modern world, how could one hear it with so much noise? Therefore, create silence."

~Søren Kierkegaard
