🔴 Is it possible to reset relations between the West and Russia?

Yes, there is always a chance to find a path to reconciliation, even in the most dire circumstances and even after the most radical disagreements. Relations between geopolitical entities are not a matter of mutual sympathy but rather a matter of balance of interests and mutual trust.

▪️The biggest obstacle to reset of West-Russian relations is definitely the loss of trust. Hypocritical nature of the collective West also creates some problems, and yet another issue stems from the very fact that the West is not a monolithic entity. Despite all of the collective West countries accepting leadership of the U.S., they still perceive themselves independent entities and keep asking “Why us?”.

▪️Why us? Was it Sweden that staged 2014 Maidan in Ukraine? Was it Italy that opened its NGOs in Central Asia? Was it Greece that placed biolabs in ex-USSR? Was it Finland what fueled the “Revolution of Roses” and endorsed Georgian leader’s dream to get to NATO at all costs?

Of course, not. Countries of the “collective West” include Japan, South Korea, Australia and some other countries that are not part of the West. They rejected collective responsibility for actions of the Western block. It was all about Americans.

Russia seemed to accept that approach but 2022 changed everything. Collective sanctions against Russia became a clear indicator of that. Revelations of German ex-chancellor Angela Merkel about bogey nature of Minsk agreements destroyed the trust completely.

Without trust any reset of relations is a very hard process. Russia is the offended party and is actively pursuing its own purposes that no longer include the collective West. Will the West try to do it? Maybe yes.

The initiative will most likely come from the USA. Despite their internal problems, the USA are still a great power, they are a sovereign country that can choose its foreign policy in accordance with its interests. They are still strong enough to acknowledge their mistakes.

EU has transformed into some amorphous swamp and is not respected anymore. Not in Moscow, not in Beijing, not in Washington. EU bureaucrats guided by some unclear motives are demolishing their relation with neighboring energy supplier Russia up to have their aggregated parliament qualify it as state sponsor of terrorism.

The USA, on the contrary refrain to cut all bridges and even keep negotiating with Russia on their mutual interests, from the nukes to hostage exchanges. Moreover, 2024 is looming on the horizon and almost inevitable change of power in the United States may mark yet another turn in their foreign policy.

▪️When Russia emerges victorious and strong from the Ukrainian conflict, it will be able to deal with the USA as an equal and, more importantly, will be accepted as an equal. Might makes right, and this rule has not gone anywhere.

It doesn’t mean that Russia and US will become allies, friends or partners. It just means that the U.S. will become an important part of an emerging world order. Real rulers of America are not idiots and they follow an old rule: “If you can’t beat it, lead it.”
