In medieval Ireland, the saints took over the role of the Fianna as dragon-slayers. Saintly encounters with 'péist' (beasts) are common, and monsters are defeated in acts of tribulation, such as St Patrick's banishing of the serpents.

Crom Dubh was once the main god of Ireland. The most important pagan pilgrimage route in Ireland once lead to the top of Crom's mountain. After Patrick defeated Crom Dubh, this became most important Christian pilgrimage route leading to Patrick's mountain.

The oration at the graveside of the late Commander-in-Chief(Michael Collins) was given by General Mulcahy in Irish.

'The clear true eyes of this man, almost alone in his day, visioned Ireland as we of to-day would surely have her – not free merely, but Gaelic as well; not Gaelic merely, but free as well.' - Pearse

#Otd 1504: Battle of Knockdoe, the largest battle ever fought between Irishmen. Occurred when Ulick Burke seized Galway city & was defeated by the Earl of Kildare. Knockdoe means 'Hill of the Axes' due to the vast number of gall óglach - Gallowglass - who died.

The 'glib' haircut if looking for something traditional yet cutting edge, from the 1500's.

In 1517 Laurent Vital described this distinctive Irish hair style thus: ‘for they (Irish men) were shorn and shaved one palm above the ears, so that only the tops of their heads were covered with hair. But on the forehead they leave about a palm of hair to grow down to their eyebrows like a tuft of hair which one leaves hanging on horses between the two eyes’.

Hy-Braesil, a mythical island said to be found off Ireland's West coast. It is said to be shrouded in fog, only becoming visible once every seven years. Giant black rabbits and magicians were said to inhabit the island. It appeared on maps from the 12th-19th centuries.

Estella Solomons (1882-1968) - 'Hayfield near Rush'. This Dublin-born Jewish painter trained under both William Orpen and Walter Osborne. A member of Cumann na mBan, she was an active Republican in the War of Independence.
