اگر «شرق»ی که می‌شناسی، هیچ‌گاه واقعاً وجود نداشته باشد چه؟

ادوارد سعید در کتاب شرق‌شناسی فقط از کتابخانه‌ها و سفرنامه‌ها انتقاد نمی‌کند —
او امپراتوری روانی‌ای را افشا می‌کند که غرب از طریق آن، «دیگری» را ساخت.

شرق در نقاشی‌ها، داستان‌ها، مستندها، و دانشگاه‌های غربی، نه آن‌گونه که هست،
