Dear colleagues,
One month on from World Health Day, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of you for helping us reach people across the world to improve understanding of depression and to encourage people with depression to seek help.
The results of our efforts, as shown by the number and nature of events taking place all over the world, and the scale of media interest and engagement on social media, have been truly amazing. This would not have been possible without your support: organizing events; developing content for sharing with your various constituencies; and posting, tweeting and sharing materials and messages on social media.
A few highlights
280 activities were registered on the campaign app, from 74 countries. Of particular note, 73 events in India were registered; 25 in the Islamic Republic of Iran, 18 in the USA and 13 in Nigeria. See http://apps.who.int/depression-campaign-2017/en for the full list. Note that the platform is still open so activities relating to the campaign that take place between now and the campaign end (on 10 October) can be submitted.
Activities ranged from poster campaigns in subways and fun-runs, to art competitions and technical seminars. Many events targeted our core audiences: adolescents and young adults, women who have recently given birth, and older people.
Engagement from heads of government (e.g Prime Ministers of Canada and India)
Widespread media reporting from all regions, from both mainstream media and outlets focusing on our target audiences
1.6 million visits to the campaign site
#WorldHealthDay trending early on 7 April
Campaign tweets seen more than 12 million times , Facebook posts reached more than 22 million people
Further details on key results are attached fyi.
Moving forward…
Our work continues. As you may recall, between now and the campaign end, 10 October, World Mental Health Day, while continuing with awareness-building, we will focus on the scale-up of services for depression. The momentum created during the first part of the campaign provides us with an opportunity to encourage establishment or scale-up of services at country level. For as at WHO, we will be working through our country offices to determine what support is needed and how we can help provide it. For those of you working at country level, we hope that you will also use this window of opportunity.
During the course of the coming months, we will continue to post new material on the campaign website www.who.int/depression/en
Latest additions:
Video on suicide prevention service in Geneva: English: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0-lUWKywJU&t=20s, and French https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnQUfb2MXPA
Personal testimony: Angelo’s story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYbuB-Ateus
We will continue to push out new material on our Facebook and Twitter channels. On Twitter we will be using the hashtags #LetsTalk and #depression
We hope that you will continue to talk about your own work relating to the campaign on these channels and using the same hashtags.
If you have ideas for this second part of the campaign, we would love to hear them. Just send me a note at bruniera@who.int and I will get back to you.
With best regards.
