Peanut the squirrel, euthanized over rabies concerns, tests negative for disease

The social media star at the center of a furor after being euthanized following a seizure by New York wildlife officials has tested negative for rabies.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) removed the squirrel and a raccoon named Fred from owner Mark Longo's home in October, citing concerns about illegal and potentially unsafe wildlife keeping.

The agency faced widespread criticism over the seizure and subsequent euthanasia, which was deemed necessary to test for rabies after Peanut bit a DEC worker.
