Why did John the Baptist say this to the Jewish leaders of his day?

The flesh counts for nothing when it comes to being the people of God. Only the promise does, only faith in that promise does. All who trust in the Lord are in Israel; all who do not, are not. This has been true since the days of Abraham. As the children’s song says, “Father Abraham had many sons, and Many sons had Father Abraham —and I am one of them, and so are you, so let’s just praise the Lord.”

Those who trust in Christ are accounted among the people of God—Israel. This is one of the most basic and consistent teachings in Scripture, but many today deny it. They make the same error the Pharisees made: they mistake what it means to be children of Abraham.

But the gospel has always centered on the promise fulfilled in Christ, not ethnicity or nationhood. Satan’s deceptions can unfold over centuries. So while people think in terms of years or maybe decades, the enemy builds long-term systems that subtly displace Jesus from the center.
