U.S. overt and covert sanctions date to 2015, at the latest, and are designed to create a political and economic crisis — even a humanitarian crisis — in order to push the Maduro government out of power. The goal is to back right-wing domestic and oligarchical forces that would dismantle the entire progressive and revolutionary movement and reverse all economic and political gains made by the majority of the Venezuelan population, especially the poor.
