قال أبو العباس ابن تيمية:
Abū al-Abbas Ibn Taymiyyah said:
اعلم أن اعتياد اللغة يؤثر في العقل والخلق والدين تأثيرا قويا بينا
Know that getting used to (the Arabic) language affects in the Aql, character and dīn a strong (and) clear effect
و يؤثر أيضا في مشابهة صدر هذه الأمة من الصحابة والتابعين ومشابهتهم تزيد العقل والدين والخلق أيضا
And it also effects in resembling the first of this Ummah from the Sahabah and al-Tab’īn and resembling increase the Aql, dīn and character also
فإن نفس اللغة العربية من الدين ومعرفتها فرض واجب فإن فهم الكتاب والسنة فرض واجب
Furthermore, the Arabic language itself is part of the dīn, and knowing it is an obligatory duty (farḍun wājib).
This is because understanding the Book (the Qur'ān) and the Sunnah is an obligation (farḍ), and they cannot be understood except by understanding the Arabic language. And that without which an obligation cannot be fulfilled is itself an obligation.
