Woolworths is expanding the rollout of its self-checkouts using cameras and artificial intelligence in stores across Australia. The self-checkouts use camera vision and artificial intelligence to detect when items aren't scanned correctly.
It was first trialled at Woolworths in Seven Hills in NSW a year ago but is now being used at more than 250 stores in three states.
This kind of normalisation of surveillance makes space for the growing use of invasive technologies in everyday life to access everyday essential services. Protecting privacy is an essential component to upholding our democracy, reining in corporate power, and fostering online safety in the digital age. ❌
Last year, Kmart and Bunnings suspended the use of facial recognition technology trials in stores following a public backlash and an investigation by the privacy commissioner on whether the trials were consistent with Australian privacy law. 👊

Alternatively, you can start your own group in your area.

without having a proper look at them, what drivers read on our signs gets stuck in their brains and they can't unsee it.

RDA is 1/3 partner of this new law firm. The principal lawyer, Gareth Rogers, has been working for RDA on minimum wages for 1.5 years. He has given FREE legal advice to hundreds of people in need. This is a service we provided by word of mouth only. We didn't have the resources to handle an influx in customers.

Serene Teffaha from CoVision, and Peter Harris from Stand Up, will discuss the obstacles of engaging people to build community. How we get people involved in the process of commitment and volunteering to build community. They will drill down to how we can all inspire others to care about food, water, shelter and health.
