No man is your brother unless he is related to you by blood or suckling. Sisters need to give up this “he’s like a brother to me” nonsense, because that man does not see YOU as a sister, no matter what he claims. You always find it’s the women who turn non-Mahrams into Mahrams, but the other party would change that in a heartbeat if possible.

There were two cousins who grew up very close and were both single for a very long time. Relatives asked the girl why she wouldn’t agree to marry the boy, as it seemed a good and compatible match in many aspects. She would always say “No he’s literally like my brother, we see each other as siblings” and the boy, and even his family, would parrot the same sentiment when in public. However, when he was privately approached by an older relative regarding whether or not he would agree go such a marriage with that female cousin, he said, “Yes I’d have no problem. If you can make it happen, please do so, but just make sure you don’t take my name in it.”

This is not an isolated incident, this is the standard, expected situation. It’s also hypocritical how the demographic that engages the most frequently in cousin marriages (Pakistanis/South Asians), are also the same demographic that insists on raising them “as siblings” and enforcing free mixing and Tabarruj among cousins like there’s no tomorrow. If a person could lose all feelings and attraction for a woman just from being raised with her, then that would be a huge advantage and convenience for women and men alike, but it doesn’t work like that. Remove this fantasy from your head and follow the Qur’an. Your Mahārim are by blood, marriage, or suckling. Don’t add what’s not there. He will never be your brother no matter what you feel, and what’s more, you will be sinful. We go by proof, not by feelings.
