Ramadhān Q&A | Fatāwā No: 480

Question: What are the nullifiers of fasting?

Answer: The nullfiers of fasting, or what it is known as Al-Mufatarat, are many. The details regarding it need elaboration and explanation but we will summarize with the aid of Allah (taʿala) and point out the most important of them:

First: Apostasy from the Din (religion).

Apostasy when fasting is considered from that which breaks and nullifies the fast, due to the saying of Allah (taʿala): “... And whosoever of you turns back from his religion and dies as a disbeliever, then his deeds will be lost in this life and in the Hereafter ...” [Al-Baqarah: 217]

And His saying: “... If you join others in worship with Allah, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain ...” [Al-Zumar: 65]

Second: Eating and drinking intentionally.

Due to the saying of Allah (taʿala): “.... and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night), then complete your sawm (fast) till the nightfall ...” [Al-Baqarah: 187]

And from the drink includes inhalation of that which has substance, and it entering into the body such as smoke for example, and connected to these are all that falls under that meaning.

Third: Intercourse.

Due to the hadith narrated by the two shaykhs (Bukhari & Muslim) in the report of the man who came to the Prophet (sallallahu ʿalayhi wa sallam) saying: “O Messenger of Allah, I am doomed, I am doomed.” He said: “What has happened to you?” He (the man) replied: “I had intercourse with my wife while I was fasting.” And this nullifier, intercourse, is one of the worst nullifiers and breakers of the fast, and the most severe expiation is required which is the freeing of a slave but whoever cannot do that then fasting 2 consecutive months and whoever cannot do that then feeding of 60 poor people.

Fourth: Menstruation and nifas (postpartum bleeding).

Due to the hadith of Muʿaza al-ʿAdawiya, which was narrated by the two shaykhs (Bukhari & Muslim) and reported in the narration of Muslim that she said to ʿAisha (radiyallahu ʿanha): “What is the matter that the menstruating woman makes up the fast and does not make up the prayer?” She (ʿAisha) said: “Are you a haruriya?” - meaning are you from the khawarij, as haruri is a sect from the sects of the khawarij - She said: “I am not a haruriya, but I am asking.” She (ʿAisha) said: “We passed through this (period of menstruation) during the time of Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu ʿalayhi wa sallam) so we were commanded to make up the missed fasts but not commanded to make up the missed prayers.”

Fifth: The emission of semen intentionally.

Whether it is by being intimate with a woman, kissing, touching, or masturbating, because that is the desire that is meant in the hadith of Abu Hurairah (radiyallahu ʿanhu) who said: “The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ʿalayhi wa sallam) said: “Allah (ʿazza wa jall) says: ‘The fast is for Me and I will give the reward for it, as he (the one who observes the fast) leaves his food, drink and sexual desire for My Sake.’” And as for the wet dream, it is not something which breaks the fast.

Sixth: Vomiting intentionally.

As it was narrated that the Prophet (sallallahu ʿalayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever vomits deliberately will have to make up that day” and it was narrated by the five Imams [Ahmad, Nasaʾi, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, ibn Majah].

And this hadith, even if it is weak, as mentioned by the critiquing Imams such as Bukhari, Ahmad and others (rahimahumullah), it has been proven, verbally and implied, by a group of the sahaba and tabiʿin such as Ibn ʿUmar, ʿAli and others (radiyallahu ʿanhum).

And an ijmaʿ (consensus) was related by Ibn Munthir (rahimahullah taʿala) and he said: “And they unanimously agreed on the nullification of the fast of the one who deliberately vomits.”

And Al-Khattabi (rahimahullah taʿala) says in the explanation of Sunan Abi Dawud: “I do not know of any disagreement among the scholars regarding the fact that whoever deliberately vomits must make up for it.”

“Repent to Allāh for forgetting His favours upon us. Allāh gave you the pleasure of sleeping at ease in your bed, and your brothers are being terrorised in other countries. You don’t thank Allāh for that? That in itself is a sin in which you need to repent from. There’s nothing too big for Allāh to forgive, there’s nothing too small for Allāh to forgive. Repent all your sins, greet Ramadān with repentance.”

In Sahih Muslim, a man gave a camel with a halter rope on it as charity. The Prophet ﷺ said you get seven hundred camels in Jannah, with halter ropes on them – meaning they are ready. Seven hundred camels in Jannah, ready for you to ride and enjoy the scenery of Jannah.

When you are stingy in charity, you are only stingy on yourself. It is only on yourself. Look at the verse:

وَمَا تُنفِقُوا۟ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَلِأَنفُسِكُمْۚ
And whatever you spend in good, it is for yourselves. (Surat al-Baqarah: 272)

When you hold back and are stingy in giving others, you are being stingy on
yourself because Allah said:
فَلِأَنفُسِكُمْۚ
It is for yourselves.

Laylat Al-Qadr was gifted to the Prophet by Allah!

How many are those who wished to see Ramadan but Allah took their souls before that, we should consider ourselves blessed to be alive to witness this blessed month. Alhamdulilah. We fast and we seek out Laylat Al Qadr, that's our target. To seek and find the night which is worth a thousand months, 83 years and 4 months. Allah is so generous. This night was a gift to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم by Allah for his nation.

The nations before us used to live much longer and ergo worship Allah more. The more you worship Allah the more you get and the higher degree of paradise you achieve. The Prophet being always concerned and wanting best for his Ummah requested something of same nature for his nation, as the life span of Muhammad's صلى الله عليه وسلم nation is only sixty years. Sixty years in comparison to the previous nations who would live and worship Allah, glorifying him and beseeching Him constantly for thousands of years is incomparable. Then Allah bestowed and gifted Prophet Muhammad (peace, mercy and blessings be upon him) the blessed night of Laylat al Qadr upon which the Quran was revealed.

Therefore, the intelligent one is the one who anticipates it, makes an aim not to miss it and concludes Ramadan achieving it by exhorting his utmost effort. It takes a real loser to miss a night like that when it's handed to you so easily.

Start your worship in Ramadhān gradually! Take off slowly, speed up, and then sprint! Pace yourself so you don't collapse before the finish-line.

What is the ruling on staying up late to watch dramas during Ramadhan?

Ramadhān Q&A | Fatāwā No: 739

Question: What is the ruling on staying up late to watch dramas during Ramadhan?

Answer: Watching dramas and staying up late hours for them is haram whether it be in Ramadhan or otherwise, except that in Ramadhan it is much worse.

We say that it is haram to watch these dramas because of the great evil it contains of uncovered women, musical instruments and spreading of doubts.

The condition of the people should not be to gather to watch such dramas and the likes of it, but rather to gather for obedience as this is the guidance of the Prophet (sallallahu ʿalayhi wa sallam) and his honourable sahabah.

Allah Allah! O muslims!
Allah Allah! Strive in acts of obedience and avoiding sins and evil things.

And Allah (taʿala) knows best.

It’s quite upsetting how lenient brothers and sisters are regarding this matter. Not just in Ramadan, but outside it as well. What’s worse is they publicize it constantly by recommending people different dramas and series to watch and ask others for recommendations. Are you not ashamed??? You boast openly about how you watch a series full of women, romance, music in the background constantly with no shame. Knowing fully well that hours pass as one watches these things.

SubhanAllah, some spend the NIGHTS watching these filthy shows. IMAGINE Allah, Lord of The Mighty Throne, descends to the lowest heaven and He says:

“WHO IS CALLING UPON ME THAT I MAY ANSWER HIM?

WHO IS ASKING FROM ME THAT I MAY GIVE HIM?

WHO IS SEEKING MY FORGIVENESS THAT I MAY FORGIVE HIM?”

And the servant is in his/her bed while Allah is asking, staring at a woman in the movie or a love scene and listening to music in the background. La Hawla Wa La Quwwata Illa Billah. What else could be a sign of a dead, hard heart if this isn’t? Are you not ashamed before your Creator? Make a firm resolve that this Ramadan, you will leave these things behind forever. Replace them with that which will bring you elated joy on Yawm Al Qiyama إن شاء الله

🆘 Fast Shawwal or the missed days of Ramadhan first

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said whosoever fasts Ramadhan...

• That means the whole of Ramadhan, complete Ramadhan...

Anyone who missed any days of fasting due to i.e sickness, the menstrual cycle, travelling etc. they did not finish Ramadhan.

They have to finish Ramadhan first then comes the six days of shawwal.

After the Prophet said whosoever fasts Ramadhan implying the full Ramadhan, then he صلى الله عليه وسلم said follow it up with 6 days, whosoever does it gets the reward of the whole year.

Ramadhan is 30 days multiplied by 10 is 300 then 6 by 10 is 60, 300 plus 60 is 360 - there are 360 days in a year, that is why your reward is as though you fasted the whole year.

You have to complete Ramadhan (Ramadhan is a month, you must make up any missed fasts to be counted from those who have completed Ramadhan) and after do whatever you want i.e extra fasts.

This is the strongest opinion.

For example you owe the Asr prayer and you go and do nawafil prayer - it doesn't work. You have to do Fardh first, it's the same with Ramadhan.

Someone missed Dhur prayer, he needs to go do the fardh first (Dhur) before he can do sunnah prayers.

Conclusion:
Complete your Ramadhan by making up the days you owe then fast the days of Shawwal.

When Muslim Spain was in a state of glory, the rulers of the independent Christian states were forced to submit to pay the Jizya and hold the Muslim ruler in awe and respect. Their was no fighting between them due to the agreed upon dominance of the Muslims. In an effort to kiss up to the Muslim ruler, a Christian leader warmly welcomed and led the emissary of the Muslim ruler on a tour of his country. During the tour, the emissary came to know that in a certain Church, a Muslim woman was being held hostage by monks. Upon returning to Córdoba, he informed the ruler (Muhammad Ibn Abi ‘Aamir) of this, who then prepared an entire army of Muslimeen which he himself led against the Christian state, plundering through cities all along the way until he reached the Palace of the Christian ruler who came out disheveled and in distress, crying at the feet of the Khalifa, begging to know what wrong he had committed to earn his anger. Ibn Abi ‘Aamir informed him of the imprisoned Muslimah and demanded her immediate release. The French king released her immediately and had the church which held her hostage razed to the ground.

And here we are, typing away, while our sisters remain hostages in the camps. May Allah paralyze the hand which reaches towards them intending harm and humiliation. Allahumma Ameen

The callers to falsehood are on the rise,
Everyone’s seeking the truth’s demise,
They preach an Islam I don’t recognize,
“Turn away from the Ummah’s suffering- just close your eyes”

Stand with the enemies and hold their hands,
Ignore the cries when they bomb our lands,
Betray those who migrated and obeyed His commands,
Hasten to carry out the enemy’s demands.
.
.

But — Tawheed remains and always withstands.
.
.

Greed for the Dunyah has reached its peak,
We’ve become cowards too afraid to stand and speak,
Undoubtedly, The Face of Allah we no longer seek,
Everyone’s concerned with their own group and clique.

The bombs are raining—they’re hitting deep,
I hear their cries in the nights— I cannot sleep,
A straying nation— as weak as sheep,
Oppression is darkness, yet not a peep.

Just take a step back and see what we’ve become,
Truth is now falsehood— except to some,
Those so called scholars are playing dumb,
Chanting fake slogans of “We Are One”...
