A motion on the illegal annexation of Palestine by "Israel" passed in the Irish Parliament today. The motion was presented by Sinn Féin, all parties supported.

Ireland is the first country in Europe to label Israel’s illegal settlements and land grab as a de facto annexation of Palestinian land.

Sadly the motion to expel the Israeli ambassador and impose sanctions was defeated.

Sinn Féin leader, Mary Lou McDonald:

"Israel is a serial violator of international law". This motion is "the most explicit and united call from this parliament against annexation". The gov't must "hold Israel to account".

"To suggest that Israel is simply defending itself is an obscenity."

Earlier today: The explosion that was heard in the new port of Sidon, was caused by the explosion of an old shell that was part of a scrap load during its compression process before it was loaded onto a commercial vessel.

The damage of the explosion was limited to material damage.

The security forces came to the scene and began their investigations into the accident.

The arrest of Marian Al-Hawaik, assistant to the governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, Riad Salameh.

Security forces raided her home and office, confiscating her electronic equipment.
