In a recent interview with Asas media, US State Department official who ended his term as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker, discussed several internal Lebanese political affairs in an obvious disrespect to Lebanon's sovereignity.

Schenker describes to Assas Nasrallah's announcement of bringing in Iranian oil as an "unbelievable story" and a "political maneuver" carried out by Hezbollah and its Secretary General to avoid the wrath of public opinion, blaming Hezbullah for being behind the fuel crisis. (1/)
Regarding the repercussions of this step, Schenker stresses that it "is a clear violation of the sanctions imposed on Iran, but the American reaction remains in the hands of the administration of President Joe Biden, and this matter in itself is a challenge."

He adds that Hezbullah's fuel stunt is an attempt to earn money, win populist points, and avoid the wrath of its people who became angry at Hezbullah, which allegedly became evident when locals in Beqaa attacked Hezbullah's MP Haj Hasan. (2/)
He then continues to accuse Hezbullah of being the main obstructer for forming a government in Lebanon.

And adds: "The most prominent challenge facing Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati lies in confronting Hezbollah with a clear position by refusing to receive Iranian oil."

He also considered that the obstacles facing Mikati are not limited to Hezbollah only: "There are the demands by Aoun and Bassil to obtain the blocking third, and if Mikati does not implement this demand, all possibilities are open." (3/)

Lebanon's official behavior in dealing with the fuel from Iran and its complete compliance with the US veto: A country that does not dare to treat this aid as an opportunity, to hold an extraordinary meeting, and to decide to officially accept it.

The news, since the announcement of the first ship, indicated American officials, including the ambassador, “have not stopped asking allied Lebanese political forces, and other neutral ones, regarding the fuel, the options available to obstruct it, if it is reaching the shore”.
