At least 9 iPhones of U.S. State Department employees in Uganda were targetted by an "unknown" assailant. These iPhones were registered with foreign telephone numbers. NSO says its intrusion system cannot work with numbers with the country code +1 (North America), and that it cancelled the spying on the relevant accounts, promising "legal actions" if a customer indeed used their tools.
The software's use is controlled by the Israeli security establishment, because export licenses must be approved by the Israeli MoD to NSO's clients. While USA was busy accusing Russia & Iran of interference, Israel got the upper hand of it.
