On this day, January 27, 2008, 8 people were killed and more than 30 wounded by the Lebanese army, after young men from Dahyeh protested against the power cuts in their neighborhoods for more than two days.

The protests expanded at night to include the South and Bekaa.

⋯ Five years after the case, the military court convicted two lieutenant-colonel officers handing them a fine of 280,000 (181$) each, and a brigadier general for a fine of 140,000 LBP (92$).

This is one of many times the army shot and killed Hezbullah or Amal protestors.

⋯ Similar events also happened 4 years earlier in 2004, when protests started in the poorest neighborhoods of Dahyeh, Hay Al-Selum, where locals protested the hike in gasoline prices.

6 were shot dead and more than 20 injured by the Lebanese army, at Rafic Al-Hariri's orders.

🚨 Bahaa Al-Hariri, Saad Al-Hariri's brother and rival, announced in a statement that he will participate in the elections to “take back” Lebanon and complete his father's (Rafik Al-Hariri) career.

It comes after his brother Saad (pictured on the left) has announced political retirement.

On this day in 2004, Hezbullah liberated 431 from Israeli prisons after it successfully kidnaped and swapped several IDF soldiers including a colonel with high security clearance.

Freed:

- 400 Palestinian
- 23 Lebanese
- Arabs and a German
